The Finance Ministry said on Monday that the import of COVID-19 relief materials including vaccines, medical oxygen and remediesvir vials will be exempted by conditional condition ad-hoc Goods and Services Tax (GST) by June 30.
The government had already exempted the import of these goods from customs and health cess, but an integrated GST (IGST) was being levied on such imports, for 'relief material being donated from abroad'. Will be withdrawn for the month. '
This exemption will not be available to domestic companies or charities importing these goods if they are purchasing them, even if for free distribution in the country, senior officials have clarified. The relevant notification specifies that the exemption is for COVID-19 material 'COVID relief has been obtained for free distribution anywhere in India'.
The chief secretaries of the state were asked to appoint nodal officers so that entities desirous of importing COVID relief material for free distribution could approach them for authentication '. Therefore global donors will need to register with individual states where they want a route for relief material.
